| Dietitian versus Nutritionist, which one? Most people are familiar with the term nutritionist. What is a nutritionist? Nutritionist, by definition is anyone who provides nutritional guidance relating to health, wellbeing, and optimal nutrition. A dietitian by definition by the American Dietetic Association, is "a food and nutrition expert who has met the minimum academic and professional requirements to qualify for the credential "registered dietitian", commonly seen as RD. As you can see there is a huge difference as a nutritionist does not have to have any formal education to provide nutrition information. Some nutritionist may be degreed in various sciences, such as biology, chemistry, or someone who has taken an interest in the subject of nutrition. When deciding who to chose in working with you to meet your goals, the dietitian or nutritionist should be a caring individual that listens to your needs, expressed desires/goals and has the knowledge to help you achieve them. Some dietitians or nutritionist may specialize in a specific area of nutrition, but registered dietitians have been through formal training on all areas of nutrition, including many disease states that are managed by lifestyle/nutritional recommendations. |
